Organotin compounds are one of the most well-established classes of thermal stabilisers used in PVC compounding. Somapla recently developed alternative non-toxic “tin free” compounds, for transparent extrusion applications. For flexible PVC, Somapla used a solid Ca/Zn stabiliser, at a similar dosage of tin stabiliser, and by changing other components of the formulation it was possible to achieve very good performance, comparable to tin stabilised compounds, considering thermal stability, initial colour, colour hold and transparency. For rigid PVC, Somapla followed a similar approach; although results so far are very promising, the formulation fine-tune is still on-going to further improves ome of the compound’s characteristics.
