Aiming to shrink healthcare’s eco-footprint, this pilot study shows red blood cells can be safely stored in refrigeration for 42 days in blood bags made from medical-grade BIOVYN™ S7560 PVC produced from renewable biomass. Compared to traditional petrochemical PVC with a DEHP plasticiser, this bio-based vinyl cuts carbon emissions by over 90%. In vitro tests confirm equivalent preservation quality, no differential effect on cytotoxicity, with low haemolysis and potassium levels. Proving they can meet medical standards and EU REACH regulations – without compromising performance – and marking a breakthrough in greener transfusion solutions.
